The Afterthought | June 2017

the afterthought from our Editor.

This issue I have had the biggest and most serious crush on pattern. Full of texture, flavour and irresistible colour schemes have made the creation of this issue so enjoyable. From London, to little old New Zealand I have found and been inspired by decadent design and serious functionality through home interior and exterior. I’ve pulled together my top 6 must haves and products to note! Not only have these ideas inspired us here at Renovate but they have also bought this vibrant June issue alive.

Have fun. X

A Mid century Modernist Mecca

Ahhhh – I don’t know what it is about Mid Century Modernism? Maybe the fact that it reminds me of my grandparents’ homes, or the fact I was a child when it was in its hay day. Today, more than ever, the midcentury modern look is everywhere. DVRs captured Mad Men's final season played out on AMC – the sleek lines, brown tones, earthy 70s vibe all combined acts as a force to be reckoned with. Generations before me are in shock its back in vogue – but it is notable that this a trend here for a good few years; inspiring design and architecture worldwide.

Oh Gerome!

Just thinking about Gerome, is salivating. The opening of ‘Gerome’ next door to our offices in Parnell, Auckland was a biggie this month. Sleek design has graced Auckland with this restaurant of epic proportions. Renovated from the old Iguaçu building and once a Parnell institution, Gerome has sprung to delight with the grandiosity of sprawling open spaces, charcoal marble table tops and alluring velvet seats lining its booths. This Modern Greek restaurant has arrived to blow all expectations out of water. Prominent head chef James Kenny, who was trained by Gordon Ramsay, brings international gastronomic expertise and we are obsessed.

Milan Design Week

The most important event on any design aficionado’s calendar; Milan Design Week. The Salone del Mobile and Milan Design Week was back and better than ever – it kicked off officially last month and wow, what an absolute dream. I had to live stream the event and was in awe the whole time. With disciples from around the world descending upon the style capital and a spate of exhibitions, immersive installations and more furniture than one could possibly need it was absolutely inspiring to say the least. Big yes.

Millenial Pink Paradise

Looking like something straight out of Wes Anderson’s eccentric subconscious, Nanan French Patisserie in Wroclaw, Poland is the coffee and cake experience that design dreams are made of. Renovated with plush velvet walls, vintage lighting, bronze-rimmed mirrors, marble tables and inviting armchairs, you’d be forgiven for visiting simply to eye the interiors — though to forgo the exceptional sweet treats would be a grave error. Macarons, chocolates and dangerously pretty pastries meticulously arranged in one central glass cabinet, the entire experience, created and curated by Poland’s revered Buck.Studio, is, in a word, incredible.

Space-age Yellow

Suddenly, I am obsessed with yellow. Yellow walls, yellow prints, yellow fruit, just yellow in general. There is nothing more teasing and divine than a spark of lemon to any wall or interior space. After walking through Christchurch and finding copious amounts of yellow everywhere I knew I had an obsession on the rise… Yellow has been proved to make one feel happier so like any inspiring profiler, yellow is an essential to feature in your home.
