ARTICLE Nicole James PHOTOGRAPHY Amanda Thomas
Starting off in fashion design, further dabbling into hair and make-up, Kelly Karam has creative flair from all angles. Now she is adding beautiful touches for many couples' special day and to a range of corporate events as a floral stylist. Often found climbing up a ladder at a wedding venue or installing a large venue display - we let Kelly take a breather to show us her inspiring space at home for thinking up designs and beautiful things.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I started out my career studying fashion design and make-up artistry. Â
How did you get involved in the florist industry?
My Mum's dear friend has run a fantastic flower shop for years - I started working for her and fell in love with floristry straight away. I found that it came to me naturally.
How would you describe your signature style?
I love to mix old and new. I love antiques, as well as contemporary art and design. This shines through in the aesthetics in my home and in the way I style my flowers.
What's your favourite flower?
A Gardenia, not only for their form but their alluring fragrance.
Where do you go for your inspiration?
Everywhere! From natural elements to food and styling.Â
Does your area at home reflect your style?Â
Yes, I draw inspiration from elements in nature - such as crystal, coral and lush green plants at home. I love antiques, but at work I like to keep things more contemporary.
What were the vital texture's that you wanted when creating your home office?
I love my workspace to feel like my own space, having the right scented candles and inspirational books around me helps keep me to feel calm and inspired - it's like a little sanctuary.
Would you recommend working from home to others?Â
Yes, I love it as it's cosy and you have everything you need at your fingertips.
How did you come up with the colour scheme?
The colour scheme is natural and inspired by nature, in my workspace I prefer neutral tones.
Do you incorporate fresh flowers into your space?
Always, but only the flowers that I love - currently Phalenopsis Orchids, garden roses, and tropical foliages.
Do you have any home styling tips for our home renovators?
A fresh coat of paint is always my first go-to in any space, and a beautiful light fitting - it completely sets the tone to any space.
